Are Charcoal Face Scrubs Useful?
3 minute read
Activated charcoal and masks have grown in popularity in the last ten years as a way to cleanse your skin. Also called activated carbon, activated charcoal is made into a fine powder, so it can be more effective when you use it, and it is primary purpose is to remove toxins and impurities and improve acne.
Although there is not an abundance of scientific evidence to support the benefits of activated charcoal masks, the general feedback is positive. Activated charcoal shouldn’t be used more than twice a week. Once a week is good enough. Overuse can cause damage to the skin, such as dryness or sensitivity. To ensure you are not allergic, try a small amount of charcoal scrub on the back of your hand and when ready on your face.
There are a lot of DIY charcoal facial scrubs and masks out there. If you are new to using them, I highly recommend you use an established brand with organic ingredients first. Remember, if you have dry skin, look for masks and scrubs containing hyaluronic acid or jojoba oil. If you have oily skin, make sure clay is an ingredient.
